urban project

The project was part of the SuperSydney studio - the studio aiming to create ways to revitalise and rethink Sydney. As Sydney’s population is projected to increase in the next decades. SuperSydney aims to address the issues surrounding Sydney by coming to our roots- asking residents what they see in the city.

My project was to specifically investigate the Ku-ring-gai municipality - the northern suburbs of Sydney. To achieve our goals of re-vitalising the town centres of Ku-ring-gai, direct feedback and interaction with locals was essential. Interviews were conducted, residents were asked what was lacking, what was great of their suburb. They were also asked what they envisioned the future of Sydney.

A scheme was developed based around a trade-off concept for Ku-ring-gai. One of the main problems in the area is the divisive split of the Pacific Highway. The six-laned highway cuts right through the area, it is dangerous, congested and polluting -affecting the livability of the area. The highway is the arterial highway that connects Sydney and north.

The trade-off scheme approaches the issues in a radical way - it projects to to bury the Pacific Highway underground. The tunnelling of the highway will eliminate the divisiveness the Highway has to the area. As an offset for this, the scheme proposes to increase the density around the town centres - accomodating the increasing population of Sydney.

The Cinema Centre aims to to this - increasing density whilst promoting the livability of the suburb and Sydney in a wider context. The existing cinema is redeveloped into a mulit-media complex having open-air ceinema facilities and hosting events and openings.

The studio was an inclusion for the Sydney Architecture Festival 2012.
